Qigong (pronounced chee gung) can seem like a complicated subject but if you're just beginning your qigong journey you don't need to dive deeply into the rabbit hole as you may get lost and confused. However there are a few details that are valuable to you whether or not you have just begun your journey.
It's good to know that the practice of Qigong is thousands of years old and has been researched and refined continuously throughout this time. Qi can be roughly translated to life force or life energy and gong translates to the cultivation or dedicated work so then qigong is the cultivation and transformation of your life force.
In China it is one of the components within Traditional Chinese Medicine along with Acupuncture, Herbal Therapy and Tui Na (massage) and is used as part of recovery after illness or surgery. Qigong therefore is not just a system of staying healthy and happy as we juggle with modern life, it's also a magnificent tool for recovery from many illnesses.
The benefits of qigong go beyond the visible as it supports cardiovascular and respiratory health, the nervous and digestive systems and overall immunity. It's an exercise for both the mind and body and even offers a path to spiritual growth.
Learning how to practise qigong can benefit you in many ways.
Some people are happy to practise qigong as a peaceful, mindful, slow moving meditation and this will bring some benefits to your physical and mental health.
Some find that they want to go deeper into the practice and they begin to discover something that is within all of us - an ability to live more in the present and to better observe ourselves. To regulate how we think and feel on a daily basis. This depth of practise will bring increased benefits to physical and mental health.
Some people find themselves fully immersed in a qigong practice and wish to learn about the deeper, more spiritual inner self and the connection we have to everyone and everything in the universe - connecting with the universal qi or energy of all things. This depth of qigong practice can be completely transformative and usually brings tremendous benefits not only to the person practising but to everyone around them.
Everyone is free to enjoy practising qigong in whichever way they choose, it's a personal choice that we are all free to make.
In Daoism we are taught that there is a continuity that moves through everything in the universe and it is present in all levels of existence. It is present in every part of us, body and spirit, it is present in everything around us and can be thought of as the Golden Thread. Delicate and fine, the thread can be woven into a beautiful practice that can help you consciously connect to yourself, to others, to the earth and to the rest of the universe.
